The flow of electricity in a wire or other conductor always produced heat. Electric soldering, electric welding electric heating, and electric lighting provided by acres or incandescent lamps are among the important process that utilize the heating effects of an electric current. With suitable devices the energy of an electric current may be utilizes to produced mechanical work, chemical changes, or radiation.
 
The definition of the potential difference between two points in an electric circuit is the work per unit charge expended in transporting the electricity from the point to the other. In equation form

Potential difference=work/charge      V =?w/?q   

The above equation may be written in the form
             
?w = v?q = vi?t

The lowercase letters are conventionally used to represent instantaneous values. When v and i are constant, the energy equation may be written in the form
              
w = VIt
