State the origin of electricity

The ancient Greeks noted the fact that when certain substances were brought into close contact by being rubbed against others, they acquired the ability to attract light objects, such as bits of cork, thread, or paper. The philosopher Thales around 600 B.C. observed that these effects were particularly strong in electron, the Greek word for amber. This is the origin of our modern word electricity.
